The Music Man is the classic musical written by Meredith Willson and is loosely based on his small town upbringing. Con man Harold Hill comes to Iowa in 1912 to sell band instruments and uniforms to the unsuspecting residents of River City. Marion, the librarian and piano teacher, sees right through him but eventually falls for his charms when he helps her younger brother overcome his lisp. Hill unites the town via music, including the bickering school board members that he forms into a barber shop quartet. In near continuous production by amateurs and professionals since its premiere in 1957, the show won 5 Tony awards including Best Musical and a Grammy for Best Musical Theatre Album. Some of the well known songs from The Music Man include 76 Trombones, Goodnight Ladies, The Wells Fargo Wagon and Goodnight My Someone.
THE MUSIC MAN is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International.

As a Comedian, Drew Hastings has been a well-known standup for 20-plus years with television comedy specials, Tonight Show appearances, and a regular favorite on the National Bob & Tom Radio Show.  As a Farmer. A lifelong, loft living, city dweller, he left Los Angeles at age 50 to take up farming in rural Ohio which he describes as “Farmageddon”.  As Mayor: he was just re-elected as Mayor of the small, rural City of Hillsboro, Ohio, where his politically incorrect candor would get most elected officials recalled, (they’ve tried twice) yet somehow he thrives.

The alumni of Aesop Academy, a school for nursery rhyme characters, are having a reunion. Unfortunately, so are the alumni of Grimm High, their cross-town rivals... and both gatherings have been scheduled for the same time and place! Bitter enemies — like Peter and the Wolf, Toto and the Witch, and Jack and the cow he sold for magic beans — face off. Old grudges are rekindled, and tensions run high. The powder keg explodes when the Cat is killed (and not by curiosity!), followed by Piggy, whose melodramatic death scene causes someone to observe, “Sheesh! What a ham!” And in the middle of all this chaos, all Queen can say is “Another one bites the dust!” There’s no end to the laughs as the two warring schools team up to solve the mystery... or risk suffering the same fate! The jokes and twists abound in this delightful romp.
14+ youth actors needed. Auditions are Monday and Tuesday, June 12 & 13, at 6 pm, at the French Art Colony. Those auditioning will be asked to read from a script (help will be provided, if needed) and should prepare a joke to tell the audition team. Rehearsals will be Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 6-8.

National Travel and Tourism Week 2017

National Travel and Tourism Week 2017

Many of us are likely familiar with the frequently touted (and research-proven) positive effects of travel on our work performance, relationships and personal well-being. But, with all the national conversation about creating and keeping good American jobs, how much thought do we give to travel’s economic power in our lives?

It certainly deserves our attention. Travel is a top-10 employer in 49 states and the District of Columbia. The industry played a major role in America’s economic recovery post-recession—and now, travel is our country’s number one service export, accounting for 11 percent of all U.S. exports in 2015. The U.S. travel industry, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, has recovered far faster than other economic sectors since 2008. Spending by travelers everywhere in the U.S., which currently totals over $947 billion annually, supports 15.1 million American jobs. That’s one in nine Americans whose employment depends upon plenty of travelers moving to and within the U.S.
In Gallia County alone, one in every 14 jobs is supported by tourism.

Our industry is one that relies on human interaction—whether it’s the front desk clerk at a hotel, the tour guide in a historic district, or the ticketing agent at an airport, our people are what make America a great place to visit, and keep our industry strong. That’s why, as part of National Travel and Tourism Week (NTTW) 2017, May 7-13, our industry is shining the spotlight on the people behind our nation’s travel industry with this year’s theme—“Faces of Travel”—and highlighting the need to craft smart, travel-friendly government policies that keep their jobs flourishing.  In Appalachia specifically, word-of-mouth is incredibly important for tourism. Travelers learn about what we have to offer mostly through our community members. One waitress' shopping suggestion can impact our economy.

This year’s NTTW is more than just another campaign. It’s a movement that positions the travel industry as a primary driver in the U.S. economy and an important part of our daily lives.
